- I've updated the story with the additional information; many thanks for the pointers. It would take a German grammarian to get the full sense of Korte's quote, but I do see there's a debate about the quote. For example, Govert Schilling says Korte claims that he was misquoted.

- John ... it was 60 mpg for the 13.3-mile leg of the trip (13.3/0.22). I just cited those figures to illustrate the rough difference between the first 20 miles or so (which came after shorter trips to West Seattle) and the last 13 miles (due to the depleted battery).

Spending money for NASA projects is about the only government function i NEVER objected too them spending my tax money on. In my lifetime the space program and especially the moon landing have been the highlight.
All the benefits generated from the space program, has made life better for all mankind.

The Hubble program is many things in one package. An outstanding project that has shown parts of the universe previously unknown. An example of the sloppy work encountered in the space program; sending the telescope into space without testing the lens. An example of our ability to remedy difficult issues when they occur. An example of what can be accomplished by unmanned space craft. Over all, a successful and productive program that worked despite the flaws.
